DETOX GUIDELINES

TRAUMA INFORMED CARE

The Upstate Intergroup directly coordinates meetings with The Phoenix Center Detox Unit.

Local groups volunteer to take a meeting to the facility three times per week.

Presently, any number of people may come from a group, but please check here often as that can change. We suggest 2 – 5 as a guideline to ensure all can participate.

When signing in, please look for the AA check-in sheet, ensure you sign in AS YOUR GROUP, not your name, this ensure the Drug and Alcohol commission are provided correct stats about our participation, not adhering to this may result in AA being marked as a NO SHOW.

The Phoenix Center has a 10-bed Medical Detox Unit on-site for any person who is likely to experience withdrawal symptoms. Their Medical Detox Unit is staffed 24 hours a day, 7 days a week with counselors, nurses, and on-call physicians. For safety, comfort and well-being, their clients are closely monitored.

At the Phoenix Center there are three immediate goals for a detox program:

  • To provide a safe withdrawal from alcohol or other drugs
  • To provide a withdrawal that is humane and that protects the patient’s dignity
  • To prepare the patient for ongoing treatment of his or her dependence

To be admitted, patients must be 18 years or older, complete an on-site screening process, and meet the medical criteria for needing acute medical detoxification as determined by staff.

During their detoxification process, clients begin to regain mental and emotional stabilization. They are expected to attend groups focused on engagement and introduction to the treatment process. Once detox is completed, usually within 5-7 days depending on the drug and severity of use, discharge planning is provided to transition clients into treatment services.

Detoxification is an opportunity to offer patients information and to motivate them for longer-term treatment and ultimate recovery.

The Upstate Intergroup does not endorse any facility over another. At this time we do refrain from taking meetings to for-profit facilities. However, our Districts do partner with for-profit facilities utilizing our Bridging the Gap program.
